Spanos was always interested in exploring the meaning of life and its connection to the universe. Every atom, molecule, cell, tissue and body system is composed of energy, as are the stars, planets, and every object in the universe. Humankind is part of something bigger; something mysterious and still unexplored.
Cosmos represents the potential of man and his connection to outer space. As if a collection of animate matter, the marble stones float into the air giving rise to an anthropomorphic head. An extra-terrestrial being is born. The swirling marbles at the side of the head allude to asteroids
and other cosmic particles. Spanos mainly works with steel and in occasions incorporates other media such as marble, stones, CDs, and industrial paint. Cosmos is a perfect example of Spanos’s virtuosic interplay with different materials, while staying true to his signature technique in manipulating iron.
